Knowledge Management in NSW Health

CIAP - where does it (and libraries) fit in anymore?

  • Now that CIAP is linked with ARCHI under the new Knowledge Management Unit, this is a chance to look at the future; and also check that old issues have been resolved. If you email any issues to Gillian, she can add them here for discussion

Clinical Decision Support

  • An overview can be found here from the UBC (in Canada) Health Library wiki

E-journals

E-JOURNALS IN HEALTH LIBRARIES: SEVEN KEY ISSUES

1. POINT OF ACCESS: ALPHABETICAL LIST OR OPAC OR BOTH?

Dow we develop and maintain our in-house e-journal lists and databases or use a commercial e-serials management software? Pros and cons?

2. GETTING PURCHASE ON PURCHASING

How do we best purchase on-line journals for health libraries?

Traditional individual library autonomy? Area-based cooperative purchasing? State-wide consortia?

Subject-based rationalisation according to institutional programs and clinical plans?

Bundling versus focussed individual title acquisition?

User-driven or strategic accessions?

Paper only, paper plus e-version, e-version only?

The cost-effectiveness of Area-wide licensing?

4. ISSUES WITH REFERENCE-LINKING AND OPEN ACCESS

Is reference-linking direct from database citations to full-text articles a useful method of delivering e-content?

Is the customisable Full Text option in CIAP viable?

7. PROMOTING E-JOURNAL LITERACY

How do we develop a program for e-journal training and literacy?

How do we integrate it with CIAP training, develop e-journal competency in our clients, promote use of ETOCs etc.

A Electronic Journal Survey 2004 comparison report benchmarking study by St George & St Vincent's Hospital Libraries highlighted a much needed improvement on e-journal management and access. Statistics were collated and reported by John Holgate, Judy McMahon (STG), Rolf Schafer & Katie McKnight (STV).
